Osmosis is a natural, organic phenomenon, a process that occurs in nature on a continous basis.  Trees, plants and flower attain their nutrients by using osmosis to draw water from the soil.

The RO Filter uses the pressure from your tap to force water through a 4 step process:

1) In the Pre-Filtration phase, particles such as silt, rust, scale and chlorine are removed.

2) Water then travels to the operational center –  The Membrane.  Here, particles too small to be trapped by the Prefilter are removed.

pH is a figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.

If you’re looking for a more scientific definition, pH is “potential Hydrogren”. pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral.  If your water has a pH value of less than 7.0, your water is acidic.  A value greater than 7.0, alkaline.  Acid water, or low pH water, shortens the life of iron and copper plumbing, and causes blue or green stains on plumbing fixtures.

One important thing to keep in mind when considering the pH scale is, it is a measurement of intensity NOT one of quantity.  It is an exponential function.  In other words, a pH of 10 is 10 times as alkaline as a pH 9 and 100 times as alkaline as pH 8 and so on.

Iron and manganese in water can produce unpleasant tastes and cause yellow, brown or rusty stains on everything it touches from your sinks to your laundered clothes.  They can also react in coffee, tea and some alcoholic beverages and produce a black sludge, affecting both taste and appearance.

These chemical elements are abundant below the Earth’s surface.  Iron can be in either the ferrous (clear), or,  ferric (red) form.  Iron in its ferrous state is quite soluble, so it is easily dissolved and carried in ground water.  When the water is exposed to oxygen in the air, it rapidly converts to a ferric state.  If your well water is producing staining and odor, iron may be the culprit.

Iron is measured in parts per million (ppm).  Levels of 0.3 ppm or higher, usually cause these unsightly results. Limited amounts of clear water iron can be removed by a water softener system.  Red water iron must be removed by filtration. High amounts of iron can be treated by water filtration using either an oxidizing filter, or a solution dispensing system feeding chlorine followed by a clarifying filter.
